Pig rearing in India are practiced with Yorkshire, Duroc & Hamshire. Which are economical & Environmentally suitable in Indian climate.

Pig Housing
Pig are housed in sheds having adjoining open wire fenced pens. Clean & sanitary conditions should be provided. Separate pens for adult male(Boar) adult female(Sow), growing (weaner) piglets and a furrowing pen for the sow in advance stage of pregnancy should be provided. Feeding & watering bins should be provided in the sheds. The floor must have adequate slope, to washout the waste properly by the drain channel.

Breeding
Healthy & mature breeder of 8 to 10 months of age are reared for breeding in ratio of 10 females & 2 males under good feeding & management.
The pregnancy period carries for 114 days. In completion of pregnancy period she furrows the piglets for 60 days. Mothers are reared separately with piglets. Then she repeats her process of gestation as above.

Depending upon the demand some piglets are sold immediately as grower piglets to other farmers who rear them for fattening purpose & sell them later as fattened pigs or the weaned pigs are reared by the breeder farmer himself up to the age of 6 months for fattening & sell every year which are sold for pork.
Sows can furrow for a at least 8 years i.e. 16 times in her life time with good results .
Piglets carry its body weight of 70 to 80 Kg. at the age of 8 months which are suitable for slaughter.

Farmers shall purchase the exotic /crossbred variety of pig sat the age of about 8 months & rear them for breeding. After achieving piglets he will keep the stock up to age of 8 months for fattening & sell them on live weight basis for pork production. The farmer will sell them either directly or through a buyer-contractor who will purchase the pigs at the farm -gate price.

Feeding
Profitable pig raising depends upon feeding pig on an economical balanced ration making full use of agriculture waste & by product garbage, slaughter house waste, soil grain, kitchen waste, processed fruit waste materials, distillery waste, sugar / jugglery industry waste, vegetable market residues etc. which are easily available in low cost. This wastes provide major portion of their protein/energy needs and also bring down the cost feeding. Supplementary concentrate feed is given to balance the nutritional requirements by giving orally mineral and calcium supplements. Pigs are good converter of meat from consuming by product waste.
